Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis – Gaza
Amid the severe humanitarian crisis facing the Gaza Strip, and as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the resilience of displaced families and ensure their access to basic food needs, Al-Fajr Youth Association continues distributing bread to displaced people through its “Free Bakeries” project in displacement shelters across the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The project is generously funded by the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA).
This initiative forms part of the Association’s emergency response plan aimed at alleviating the suffering of thousands of displaced individuals who are experiencing acute shortages of essential supplies and food. The project provides free bread on a regular basis to hundreds of families every day, helping to ease the significant economic burdens faced by household providers.
The project goes beyond delivering short-term relief assistance; it serves as a vital pillar in supporting food security for thousands of families who have lost their sources of income. In light of the ongoing fuel and cooking gas shortages, these free bakeries have provided a direct and sustainable solution by ensuring access to bread—the most essential and widely consumed staple food on Palestinian tables. This contributes significantly to closing the food gap and protecting children and families from the risks of malnutrition.
In addition to its humanitarian impact, the project has also carried important developmental and economic dimensions at a time when Gaza is experiencing record levels of unemployment. The initiative has successfully created temporary employment opportunities for dozens of young workers and bakers across southern Gaza.
This temporary employment has not only contributed to the successful implementation of the project and the delivery of high-quality bread to displaced families, but has also restored hope to dozens of households that now depend on the income generated through these opportunities to support themselves amid the current circumstances
